If It's Gold, It's Old!

Welcome to the new bathroom!  I finally finished it after 6 days, yes that's how long it took me to do this room.  Why you may ask, because I'm old and tired and it takes me longer to do things now.  I did almost all of it by myself, the hubby was away, and the boys who belong to this Jack and Jill bathroom were nowhere to be found!  But I sucked it buttercup and got it done.  I had to put 2 coats of mold killing primer on the walls, ceiling and wood trim, 2 coats of ceiling paint and 2 coats of paint on the walls.  No to mention ALL the trim in this room and caulking that had to be done, aye yai yai! That is why it took me so long.  I finished it up at 9:00 last night after working all day in there.  I still have pictures to hang and other decor to put in the room, but today is my day of rest.

Tub and toilet area before....
And look how pretty it is now.  The color, Silver Screen from Behr Paint, it's a light silvery gray/blue shade of gray.
This is the before and after of the sink and linen closet area going into one of the bedrooms.  They needed more storage so the sink was not all clogged up with their stuff.  I purchased this HEMNES tiered shelf from IKEA, with the family discount card it was only $84.15.  The white storage baskets on the shelf are from Target.
Before and after of the sink area going into the other bedroom.
I purchased this handy dandy HJALMAREN towel rack at IKEA too, so they stop hanging wet towels off the door handles, it was $79.99.  Also at IKEA this 5 x 3 foot HULSIG rug for the floor, $14.99.  I am happy to say it's all done and now I can move on to redoing the guest room, stay tuned.

Do The Dishes!

I love pretty dishes, but why do I have so many sets of them?  Ten sets to be exact, who needs ten sets of dishes? No one, that's who.  I can't part with the ones I have, although this past year I did send a set to the thrift store, and gave my daughter a set of china that I had for 27 years.  I love to decorate with them, hang them on walls, set the dining room table for a meal or just to decorate it for everyday to look pretty.  My dining room is a soft yellow, I am now bringing more of that color into the house, to brighten things up a bit.  The weather this winter made me do that!  I switched out the reds and green for blues and yellows, and I have to say I like it, they are classics together.  I picked up things, while out and about, to decorate along with my blue and white Willow patterned china.  I may be painting this dining room furniture white this summer if I get the energy, it's old and needs an update.  I'll also cover the seats on the chairs, the fabric is outdated.

I set the table with the Willow china,a navy charger, hyacinth woven placemat and a yellow and white checked cloth napkin.
I was in Home Goods and found these yellow chrysanthemum bowls for $3.99 each so I scooped them up to change up my table.
The petals are really detailed and they look pretty against the blue.

This is how the table looked before.
And this is how it looks now!  Yellow brightens everything up, it's like sunshine.
A jute woven runner, whitewashed lantern, greenery garlands, lighted twigs, blue and white pottery and lemons finish my table off.
I also found in Home Goods this slice of tree trunk.  You can use it to serve on or decorate with.  I have another one that has ball feet on it.  They're great for a rustic themed party to serve food on.
Just a sign that keeps me hoping that Spring is in the air!

The Quick Fixer Upper

So, I am now on to my next project, painting my boy's bathroom.  Uggghh! they drive me crazy!  They're a mess and so is this bathroom.  They are grown, 23 and 25 years old, were taught how to clean, cook and do laundry at a young age, do ya think they would clean this bathroom?!  I don't even go in there.  I get agitated enough maybe once or twice a year and check it out, put on my HAZMAT suit, and because I am so disgusted by it, I will breakdown and clean it.  I hold out as long as I can because I THINK they will get tired of the dirt and clean it! Silly me.  These "mammoni's" better get their acts together! After this bath is done they're getting read the RIOT act, trust me.

There is some mold in this bathroom, so I did some research to figure out how to combat it.  Peroxide is one way.  I would put it in a spray bottle, spray where there was mold and then wipe it with a clean cloth.  To fix the problem in this bathroom so it does not happen again, I found a weapon in can - Zinsser Mold Killing Primer.  Roll it on the walls just like paint and BOOM baby it's all gone, and it seals the walls.  My second little weapon is FROG tape.  Better than painter's tape, it doesn't stick when you go to peel it off, leaving clean lines.
So my first course of action was to sand the walls, you can see some mold there in the corner.
Then I patched any imperfections on the walls.
Took down all the vents, and started taping around the room.  This part of the bath is where the tub and toilet are.
Everything is taped, patched and ready to prime.
This handy little roller keeps the paint from splattering all over the place.  I always use it for painting the ceiling with an attached extension pole, makes the job go easier and faster.
I took off the towel rack and toilet paper holder and the first coat is almost done.
Top of the tub and ceiling, first coat on.  Let it dry for 2 1/2 hours in between the first and second coat.  Just enough time to take a break have some lunch!
Two coats later, let it dry overnight and you're ready to begin painting.
This was a small area to paint, but I'm tired, I am taking a shower and going to rest!
This is the other part of the bath that will also be painted, it's galley style with a double sink, lots of cabinet and drawer storage underneath, a linen closet and doors to both of their rooms on either side. Stay tuned for the finished bath redo in the next few days!

Freebies!

It was my birthday on Saturday, and to my surprise I got a ton of offers via email and regular mail for a lot of free things.  All I had to do was take my coupon or print my coupon (you all know how I love a coupon!) and drive to collect my freebies, it was that easy.  First on my list was Ulta, they gave me a free eye shadow worth $12.99, and on top of that I bought 2 lipsticks and some makeup sponges that I needed, and I got a cute makeup bag full of makeup for free!  I also received offers from restaurants for free appetizers or desserts (Bertucci's, Texas Roadhouse Maggiano's, Pizzeria UNO and Panera), discount coupons for shoes and clothes (DSW, Payless, Famous Footwear, Dressbarn) a mani/pedi at my local salon, and a discount at a local Hallmark store. I also receive in the mail a Birthday PAK that has many $10 and $20 off coupons for local restaurants, check them out.  It pays to fill out your info when these places ask for it, they do give you some good things just for being a customer.  I haven't used all my coupons yet, but they sure make having ANOTHER birthday not so bad!

Ulta offered a pink or purple makeup bag, I am a pink girl.  The bag had a lip gloss, lip pencil, 3 quads of eye shadow, single eye shadow, double sided eyeliner pencil, nail polish, bronzer, eyebrow enhancer, mascara and makeup brushes.  The big complete eyeshadow in the front was the birthday gift.

It was even printed with happy birthday, gorgeous!  How cute is this?

Repeat After Me - Cannoli

My youngest and I made cannolis on my birthday, it was a quiet afternoon at home for us, so we broke out the equipment and ingredients to make them.  I revamped my recipe just a touch so I posted it here.  It didn't take long, about 2 hours, to have these wonderful, crispy shells filled with delicious ricotta cream and chocolate chips.  Feast your eyes on these babies, they are so good!

My daughter rolling and cutting the shape of the cannolis.
I wrap the tubes and fry the shells.  With two people making them the process goes much faster.
Shells pulled off the tubes and cooling on racks.
Shells are cooled and one is filled, have to taste test it,  uuummm delizioso!
Cannoli Recipe

Ingredients For The Cannoli Shells
3 cups of unbleached flour
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
3 tablespoons cold butter, cut into 9 small pieces
1 egg
1 egg yolk
1/2 cup sweet Marsala wine
1 tablespoon white vinegar
2 tablespoons water
1 egg, beaten, to seal the edges
2 quarts of canola oil for frying

Directions for the shells:
In a medium bowl sift together the flour, sugar and cinnamon.  Cut in the butter until the mixture is the size of small peas.  Make a well in the center and add the egg, egg yolk, Marsala wine, vinegar and water. Mix with a fork until the the dough becomes stiff, then finish it by hand, kneading on a clean flat surface.  Add a bit more water if needed to incorporate all of dry ingredients.  Knead for about 10 minutes, shape into a flattened disk, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 - 2 hours.

Divide the dough into thirds, flatten each one just enough to get through the rollers on a pasta machine.  Roll the dough through the settings successively, until you have reached the thinnest setting. The sheet should be thin enough to almost see through it.  Dust lightly with flour if necessary.  Place the sheet of dough on a lightly floured surface and cut, using a large round cookie cutter, a large glass, a small bowl, or make a paper form and cut by hand into 4 to 5 inch shapes. Wrap the dough around cannoli tube, seal the edge with the tip of your finger and a little bit of the beaten egg.  Be careful not to get the egg on the tube, the shell will stick to it when frying.

Heat the oil to 375 degrees in a deep fryer or deep  heavy pan.  Fry shells on the tubes a few at a time 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. Carefully remove from oil with tongs to a cooling rack.   Remove the shells from the tubes with 2 sets of tongs, grabbing shell with one, and tube with the other and twisting it carefully. Reuse the tubes for the remainder of the dough. Cooled shells can be placed in an airtight container and kept for up to 2 months.  Only fill the shells when you are ready to serve them.  Makes about 32 - 35 shells.

Ingredients For The Cannoli Cream:
Cheesecloth
1 lb of whole milk ricotta cheese
1 1/2 lbs of mascarpone cheese
3 cups of confectioners sugar, sifted
6 teaspoons of vanilla bean paste
mini chocolate chips

Directions for the cream:
OVER NIGHT - Place a colander over a large bowl, and lay the cheesecloth inside the colander.  Empty the ricotta cheese into the cheesecloth, gather up the ends and twist, and secure it with a twist tie.  Place in the refrigerator to drain over night.

NEXT DAY - When ready to mix the cream, unwrap the ricotta and dump the cheese into the clean bowl of a food processor, discard the water. Add the mascarpone cheese, confectioners sugar and vanilla bean paste. Process until blended. Transfer the filling to a pastry bag when ready to fill cannoli shells (see note). When shells are filled, dip each end of cannoli into mini chocolate chips.  Makes enough cream for 32 - 35 shells.

NOTES:
1. Special equipment needed - cheesecloth, pasta machine, cannoli tubes
2. Do not fill the shells until you are ready to eat them.

Coffee, Tea and Me

I was never a coffee fan growing up, but as I got older I learned to love it.  Now I can not start my day without a cup or two.  It gets me going, revs me up, so I can move my day along doing the things I need to get done.  I have found that if I don't drink it every morning I get a headache, I need that caffeine!  I guess I'm addicted to it now.

My family gave me a basic Keurig coffee machine six years ago for Christmas, I think when they first started hitting the market, and I could not wait to use it.  I grew to love my new fangled coffee maker, and can't live without it now.  It started seeing it's better days, wore out from old age I guess, after using it everyday, sometimes twice a day.  I finally broke down and bought it's new cousin, and I am happy to say it is a gem and did not disappoint me.  My new machine is quiet, doesn't make any noise when brewing, it's sleek, updated and this new one has a carafe so you can make a pot of coffee when having quests.  It came with 36 K-cups - Paul Newman Special Blend,  Donut Shop Regular and Green Mountain Breakfast Blend.  It also came with a 6 pack variety of Starbucks Pike Place Roast, Green Mountain - Nantucket Blend, Hazelnut, Donut House and Barista Prima Coffeehouse Italian Roast, and for the carafe a variety of 4 larger pods - Green Mountain French Roast, Breakfast Blend, French Vanilla and Donut Shop Regular.

I am so happy with my new morning friend, just enjoying a cup of fresh brewed coffee, without having to fight with a coffee maker because like the rest of us it got old, is a pleasure.  Check out my new coffee maker I got for my birthday, she's a looker!

She was sleeping, now she just woke up and will brew me my morning joe in a few seconds.
This is everything that my new coffee maker came with.
The pods to make a carafe of coffee are much larger.  The carafe is a great option to have.
Sitting down on a Sunday morning, or any other morning and getting lost in a great cup of coffee!  The simple things in life.
